Spam calls
TRAI has made complete preparations to deal with scammers. New steps are being taken continuously for this by the Telecom Regulatory and Telecom Department. TRAI has decided to implement strict rules to protect users from unwanted commercial communication (UCC) to amend the Telecom Commercial Communications Regulation ie TCCCPR 2018 to curb the growing spam calls in the country. These rules were declared on 12 February 2025, which has been confirmed by the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development in the Lok Sabha today.
What is TRAI’s new anti -spam rule?
- In the rule revised by TRAI, people will now get more time to file a complaint than before. Users can now complain of spam calls and messages for 7 days, for which only 3 days were available.
- Apart from this, it has been decided to take fast action on spammers. Earlier, telecom companies used to get 30 days to take action on telemarketers, which has now been tightened to 5 days.
- TRAI has also tightened the complaint system, making the rules more strict. If 10 complaints were received in the first 7 days, then action was taken. Now action will be taken only after getting only 5 complaints in 10 days. Due to this strictness, spam calls or messages will be tightened quickly.
When will the new rules apply?
The Union Minister of State said that these revised rules will be published in the official Gazette within 30 days. However, some of its provisions will be implemented after 60 days. Even before implementing the new amended rules, TRAI directed telecom companies on 13 August 2024 last year to work to disconnect all the resources of illegal telemarketers. Its major impact has been seen.
Effect of strictness
Between August 2024 to January 2025, there has been a huge decrease in complaints of spam calls. The strictness of TRAI caused complaints of 1,84,419 spam calls and messages in August, which decreased to 1,34,821 in January. Apart from this, TRAI has done the work of blacklisting more than 1,150 companies and individuals. Also, more than 18.8 lakh telecom resources have been disconnected.
