Apple Globalstar
Preparations for satellite internet service have started in India. Telecom regulators may soon do spectrum alocate to all service providers. Recently, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that spectrum for satellite services will be done in an administrative manner. For this, telecom regulator is preparing framework. In addition to Jio and Airtel for satellite internet service in India, Alan Musk’s company Starlink and Amazon Kuiper are made in the race. Now Apple has also entered.
Globalstar asked for approval
Apple’s satellite service partner Globalstar has demanded regulatory approval to start satellite service in India. With its entry, Apple-Globalstar has increased the tension of Airtel Eutelsat Onweb, Amazon Kuiper, Reliance Jio Satcom and Starlink. According to the report, Globalstar has demanded regulatory approval for this from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACS), a satellite service authorizing agency in India.
According to an ET Telecon report, the official associated with the case said that the company hopes that soon the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) will get the license of Global Mobile Personal Communication (GMPCs) for satellite service in India. For this, the company has also demonterated some use case of disaster management to the Department of Telecommunications. However, the company has not yet applied for commercial license.
The Department of Telecommunications makes service providers to spectrum for some time, so that the service can be demonstrated and tested. This allocation is based on non-interferance and non-protection as well as non-commercial service. Such spectrum can only be used for network testing and experiments. Satellite service providers need GMPCS license as well as autorization of in-space to start their service in India.
Apple partnered with Globastar in 2022 for satellite connectivity. The company gave a satellite connectivity feature in the iPhone 14 series launched in 2022, in which users get calls and messages even without any mobile network during emergency. Apple has given this feature in all the iPhone models launched since 2022.
